Before the rains: the five-minute check that stops a mosquito season

Mosquitoes breed in whatever water is standing on your property. Here is what to look at before the first rains.

Every year the same thing happens: the first rains arrive, and three weeks later everyone is complaining about mosquitoes. The insects that cause that are breeding on your own property, in water that has been sitting there since the rain stopped.

Where to look

  • Blocked or sagging gutters holding water
  • Old tyres, buckets, drums and wheelbarrows left outside
  • Plant pot saucers and disused sinks
  • Uncovered water tanks and drums
  • Blocked drains and shallow depressions in the yard

A mosquito needs about a bottle cap of water to breed. Emptying, covering or draining these before the season starts does more than anything you can spray afterwards.

When it needs more than that

If you have standing water you cannot remove — a fire tank, an ornamental pond, a drainage channel — that is where larvicide belongs. On a lodge or a compound with staff housing, a scheduled programme through the wet season is worth far more than a single fog before Christmas.
