Spiders

Most spiders are harmless, but webbing in a food or retail space is not acceptable.

Spiders are largely beneficial, and most of what turns up in a Malawian building is harmless. The practical problems are cosmetic and hygienic: webbing across stock, in corners and over lighting looks neglected, and in a food premises it is an inspection point.

A heavy spider population is also a signal in its own right — it means there are plenty of flying insects for them to eat.

Signs you have spiders

  • Webbing in corners, over stock and around lighting
  • Egg sacs in undisturbed areas and store rooms
  • A rise in numbers where flying insects are plentiful
  • Spiders concentrated around external lights at night

Why it matters

  • Webbing over stock and fittings looks neglected
  • An inspection point in food and hospitality premises
  • A few species can give a painful bite
  • Genuine distress for people who fear them

How we treat it

We treat harbourage points and apply residual treatment to the corners, frames and voids spiders actually use, and remove webbing as part of the visit.

Because spiders follow their food, we usually treat the flying-insect problem at the same time — otherwise the webs are back within weeks.
