Scorpions
Scorpions shelter in rubble, woodpiles and stored material, and sting when trodden on or handled.
Scorpions shelter under rubble, timber, stored material and loose masonry during the day, and hunt at night. Nearly every sting happens when one is trodden on, sat on or picked up inside a shoe or a folded cloth.
They are a particular concern around schools, lodges and staff housing, where the consequences of a sting to a child are far more serious.
Signs you have scorpions
- Scorpions under stones, timber, rubble or stored material
- Sightings indoors at night, especially on ground floors
- Activity around external lighting where insects gather
- More encounters at the start of the wet season
Why it matters
- Painful stings; medically serious for children and the elderly
- Hides in shoes, bedding and stored clothing
- A liability around schools, lodges and staff housing
- Frightening enough to disrupt a whole site
How we treat it
We clear and advise on harbourage — rubble, timber stacks, material against walls — treat the perimeter and entry points, and reduce the insect population they feed on.
Where there is a real risk to children we also work through the practical measures with you: bed placement, storage, external lighting, and checking footwear.
