Centipedes
Centipedes indoors mean damp and clutter — and a supply of smaller insects to hunt.
Centipedes come indoors looking for damp and for prey. They are hunters, so they are a sign that there is something to hunt: silverfish, small cockroaches, ant brood.
The larger species deliver a painful defensive bite if handled, which is the usual reason people call.
Signs you have centipedes
- Fast-moving centipedes in bathrooms, stores and ground floors
- Activity concentrated in damp or poorly ventilated rooms
- More sightings after rain
- Other small insects present in the same rooms
Why it matters
- A painful bite from the larger species
- Indicates damp, which causes problems of its own
- Distressing to find in bedrooms and bathrooms
How we treat it
We treat entry points, damp areas and harbourage, and deal with the insects they are feeding on — a centipede treatment that ignores the food supply does not hold.
We will also point out the ventilation and drainage issues behind it, because the long-term fix is usually a dry floor rather than a chemical.
